ENROLLING IN MEDICARE PART B

CLICK HERE TO LEARN ABOUT PART B

Could you cover 100% of an open heart surgery after an unexpected heart attack? Could you cover all costs for an MRI? For most people, the answer is no. Enrolling in Part B helps cover 80% of things like surgeries, lab work, doctor visits, physical therapy, etc.

Medicare Part B requires you pay a premium and in turn covers 80% of important outpatient expenses that happen in and out of the hospital.

Medicare Part B is optional because many people choose to postpone enrolling until they retire and their employer's health plan is no longer their primary insurance. You need Medicare Part B if Medicare is your primary insurance.

Situations where Medicare is commonly one's primary insurance and you must have Part B:

  • Employer's coverage is for a company less than 20 people and you're 65+
  • You're on Medicare due disability and under 65 working for an employer with less than 100 people
  • You have retiree coverage from previous employer
  • COBRA insurance requires you enroll in Part B by the 8th month of COBRA
  • You have Tricare for Life (TFL) or CHAMPVA when you're turning 65
  • You're enrolled in Medicaid at 65+

Penalties will be owed if you fail to enroll in Part B and decide to later on.
